When monster is summoned you have a limited time frame to defeat the monster. Amount of time given for the battle vary for different monsters - from hour for simplest monster to several days for the most dangerous beasts. To receive a reward, you should defeat the monster in a given time frame, otherwise the monster will escape and no reward will be given.
